About Los Angeles

If Los Angeles County were an independent nation, it would have the 14th largest economy in the world, larger than that of either Australia, Netherlands, Russia, Taiwan, or Switzerland.

The name Los Angeles is Spanish for The Angels. There is much more to this name, however. On Wednesday, August 2, 1769, Father Juan Crespi, a Franciscan priest accompanying the first European land expedition through California, led by Captain Fernando Rivera Y Moncado, described in his journal a "beautiful river from the northwest" located at "34 degrees 10 minutes." They named the river Nuestra Seqora de los Angeles de la Porcizncula.

In the Franciscan calendar, August 2 was the day of the celebration of the feast of the Perdono at the tiny Assisi chapel of St. Francis of Assisi. Early in St. Francis life, the Benedictines had given him this tiny chapel for his use near Assisi. The chapel, ruined and in need of repair, was located on what the Italians called a porziuncola or "very small parcel of land." Painted on the wall behind the altar was a fresco of the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels. Now contained within a Basilica, the chapel was named Saint Mary of the Angels at the Little Portion. The newly discovered "beautiful river" was named in honor of this celebration and this chapel.

In 1781, a new settlement was established along that river. The settlement came to be known as El Pueblo de Nuestra Seqora la Reina de los Angeles de Porcizncula or The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels of the Little Portion although its official name was simply El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles

Prayer Focus for LA/ San Fernando Valley/ Southern California

Day 1 Sunday, April 17

--1. Restore us Oh God. Revive us that your people may rejoice.

Psalms 85:4-7
(4) Restore us again, O god our Savior and put away Your displeasure toward us. (5) Will You be angry with us forever? Will You draw out Your anger to all generations? (6) Will You not revive us again: that Your people may rejoice in You? (7) Show us Your mercy, O Lord, and grant us Your salvation.

--2. Lord receive our petition and use your church in Los Angeles / Hollywood & Southern California for your purposes.

Isaiah 49:8-9
(8) This is what the Lord says, In an acceptable time have I heard you, and in a day of salvation have I helped you: and I will preserve you, and give you for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages; (9) That you may say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, show yourselves. They shall feed in the way, and their pastures shall be in all the high places.

--3. Remember your covenant with our spiritual fathers and mothers that preceded us.

Genesis 28:11-15
(11) And he arrived upon a certain place, and remained there all night, because the sun was set; and he took stones of that place, and arranged them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. (12) And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached into heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. (13) And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon you lay, to you will I give it, and to your seed; (14) And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. (15) And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you in all places where you go, and will bring you again into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken to you of.

Day 2 Monday, April 18

--1. Renew Your covenant with us.

Isaiah 58:12
(12) And they that shall be of you shall build the old waste places: you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

--2. For You have promised to manifest Yourself in every generation.

Genesis 17:7
(7) And I will establish my covenant between Me and You and your seed after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto you, and to your seed after you.

--3. We delight to hear concerning Your awesome works and display of Your presence and glory in previous generation.

Deuteronomy 32:7

(7) Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask your father, and he will declare them to you; the elders, and they will tell you.

--4. Once again, we wait for Your saving grace in our generation and in Southern California.

Isaiah 64:1-4
Oh that You would rend the heavens, that you would come down, that the mountains might flow down at Your presence, (2) As when the melting fire burns, the fire that causes the waters to boil, to make Your name known to those who oppose You, that the nations may tremble at Your presence! (3) When You did awesome things that amazed us, You came down, the mountains flowing down at Your presence. (4) For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, that none can do these things O God, beside You, and what You have prepared for Him that waits on You.

--5. Let Your praise and honor be known by Your people here once again.

Isaiah 57:15-19
(15) For this is what the high and lofty One says that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. (16) For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made. (17) For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid myself, and was wroth, and he went on proudly in the way of his heart. (18) I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners. (19) I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, says the Lord; and I will heal him.

--6. Establish your covenant with us now.

Isaiah 55:3
(3) Incline your ear, and come close to me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

Day 3 Tuesday, April 19 Revive Our Land

--1. We have heard from the generation before us, O Lord how You displayed Your wonders;

Psalms 44:1&23
(1) We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what wonders You performed in their day, in the times of old. (23) Awake, why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise, cast us not away forever.

--2. And though we have forsaken Your covenant.

Deuteronomy 31:20
(20) For when I shall have brought them into the land which I swore unto their fathers, that flows with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and have become fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant.

--3. You have said, You will never forsake Yours covenant with us.

(1) And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I swore unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

(30) When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord thy God, and shall be obedient unto his voice; (31) (For the Lord thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he swore unto them.

(16) O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I beseech You, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain: because of our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people have become a reproach to all that are about us. (17) Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and cause Your face to shine upon Your desolate sanctuary, for the Lord's sake. (18) O my God, incline Your ear, and hear; open Your eyes, and behold our desolation, and the city which is called by Your name: for we do not present our supplication before You for our righteousness, but for Your great mercies. (19) O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for Your own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by Your name. sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Isaiah 61:4-9

(6) But you shall be named the Priests of the Lord; men shall call you the Ministers of our God: You shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall you boast yourselves. (7) For your shame you shall have double fruitfulness; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double portion: everlasting joy shall be unto them. (8) For I the Lord love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. (7) Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why should it take space in the ground? (8) And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: ( 9) And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that you shall cut it down.

--4. For we are those who intercede for Los Angeles / Hollywood & Southern California.

Isaiah 59:16
(16) And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

--5. We pray for those who labor in the gospel

Isaiah 59:15
Yes, truth fails; and he that departs from evil makes himself a prey: and the Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

--6. That all might come to repentance and know Your saving knowledge

1 Timothy 2:1-7
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; (2) For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. (3) For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; (4) Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. (5) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; (6) Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. (7) Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

Isaiah 57:15-19
(15) For this is what the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, Whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. (16) For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made. (17) For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went straight on in the way of his heart. (18) I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners. (19) I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, says the Lord; and I will heal him.

Day 7 Saturday, April 23 Identification Repentance for Hollywood / Los Angeles / So. California

--1. We acknowledge Your faithfulness

2 Chronicles 7:14
(14) If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

--2. Your church acknowledges our sin

Isaiah 1:10-20
(10) Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. (11) To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? Says the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. (12) When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts? (13) Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. (14) Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. (15) And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide My eyes from you: yes, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. (16) Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; (17) Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. (18) Come now, and let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (19) If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: (20) But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

--3. And the sin of all your people

Daniel 9:3-13
(3) And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: (4) And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; (5) We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments: (6) Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spoke in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. (7) O Lord, righteousness belongs unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee. (8) O Lord, to us belongs confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. (9) To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against him; (10) Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. (11) Yes, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him. (12) And he hath confirmed his words, which he spoke against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem. (13) As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand thy truth.

Nehemiah 1:4-11
(4) And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven (5) And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keeps covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: (6) Let Your ear now be attentive, and Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against You: both I and my father's house have sinned. (7) We have dealt very deviously against You, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which You command Your servant Moses.(8) Remember, I beseech You, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, If you transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: (9) But if you turn toward me, and keep My commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out to the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from there, and will bring them back to the place that I have chosen to set My name there. (10) Now these are Your servants and Your people, whom You have redeemed by thy great power, and by Your strong hand. (11) O Lord, I beseech You, let now Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants, who desire to fear Your name: and prosper us, I pray You, Your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.

--4. The sins of your servants and pastors

Isaiah 42:18-20 & 22
(18) Hear, you deaf; and look, you blind, that you may see (19) Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the Lord's servant? (20) Seeing many things, but you observe not; opening the ears, but he hears not. (21) The Lord is well pleased for His righteousness' sake; He will magnify the law, and make it honorable. (22) But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivers; for a spoil, and none says, Restore.

--5. Have mercy on the cities that we call our home.

Jeremiah 29:4-14
(5) Build your houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them; (6) Take wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that you may crease there, and not diminished. (7) And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away as captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace of that place shall you have peace. (8) For this is what the Lord of hosts says, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in your midst, deceive you, neither listen to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed (9) For they prophesy falsely unto you in My name: I have not sent them, says the Lord. (10) For this is what the Lord says, That after seventy years be finished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform My good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. (11) For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (12) Then you shall call upon me, and you shall go and pray unto Me, and I will listen to you. (13) And you shall seek Me, and find Me, when you shall search for Me with all your heart. (14) And I will be found of you, says the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

--6. Have mercy on the places where Your Church meet.

Isaiah 1:8-9
(8) And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city. (9) Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

--7. Make Your covenant with us and turn away Your wrath.

2 Chronicles 29:10
(10) Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the Lord God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us.

--8. For it is in Your heart O God that none perish, that all should have everlasting life.

2 Peter 3:9
(9) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

--9. We acknowledge, we have not taken our responsibility for the witness of your son Jesus, seriously.

Matthew 5:14-16
(14) You are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. (15) Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light to all that are in the house. (16) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
